COVID-19 pandemic can end this year: WHO chief

Speaking at the press conference at the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Geneva headquarters, WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus shared the details of the U.N. body’s plan released today to end the global emergency of COVID-19 in 2022.

Emphasizing that the “Strategic Preparedness and Combat Plan to End the Covid-19 Global Emergency in 2022” is applicable to the world, Tedros said, “COVID-19 may end this year.”

Stating that there are the scenarios for the evolution of the virus, Tedros said, “In the best scenario, we will see few variants that will not require booster doses from now on. In the second scenario, we can see that the virus continues to evolve, but the rate of severe disease has decreased thanks to vaccinations. In the worst case scenario, we can see that more severe and contagious variants of the virus emerge, and that no vaccine works against this new threat.”

Tedros emphasized that for the realization of WHO’s plan in the light of the aforementioned scenarios, each country should attach importance to virus tracking, vaccination, a health system resistant to COVID-19, equal access to anti-virus tools and global cooperation.

Underlining that the epidemic can be easily brought under control by using the means of combating COVID-19 well, Tedros said, “We can save many lives by providing fair access to vaccines and treatment.”
