EMA: New wave of COVID-19 swept Europe

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has announced a new wave of coronavirus in Europe and has urged people over the age of 60 to get a second booster dose of the vaccine.

Marco Cavaleri, head of the EMA’s Department of Health Threats and Vaccine Strategy, said at a press conference on Thursday that a new wave of coronavirus has swept many countries in Europe.

Cavaleri believes that the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of the omicron strain will become dominant in European countries and will crowd out all other variants by the end of July.

According to him, at the moment there is no evidence that these subtypes of the omicron strain carry an increased risk of severe disease, but the number of cases of infection among the elderly is increasing, which leads to an increase in severe cases.

An EMA specialist has recommended that people aged 60-79 and vulnerable people of all ages in the EU be vaccinated with a second booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
