More than 850 thousand tourists visited Cappadocia in 7 months

Cappadocia, one of the centers of tourism in Turkey, was visited by 854,449 local and foreign tourists in January-July this year.

A large number of tourists annually visit this part of Anatolia to admire the unique natural landscape of the region, in particular the Peribajalara valley, ancient monasteries in the rocks, underground cities and other attractions.

Last year, against the backdrop of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, only 419,905 local and foreign tourists visited the region’s attractions in the first 7 months, while this year this figure reached 854,449.

The largest number of tourists arrived in Cappadocia in July of this year, during the celebration of the Eid al-Adha – 370,534 visitors.

In the first seven months of 2021, the largest number of tourists visited the Zelve cave complex – 243 308. This is followed by the Goreme open-air museum – 215 483 tourists and the underground city of Kaymakli – 133 872 visitors.

In an interview with Anadolu agency, President of the tourism development cooperative of Goreme Mustafa Durmaz said that the pandemic that swept the whole world had a negative impact on the tourism sector.

The tourism sector has begun to revive thanks to the vaccination process, which gained momentum in 2021, he said.

“The number of tourists to Cappadocia, which did not exceed 1 million in 2020, will beat this figure by the end of 2021. We believe that the number of local tourists will increase in the coming months”, Durmaz said.
