Turkey to run intensive vaccination campaign in June, Erdoğan says

Turkey will conduct an intensive COVID-19 vaccination campaign in June, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Wednesday.

The country aims to deliver full normalization of social life thanks to the June vaccination drive, according to Erdoğan.

“We want to ensure normalization in our country by conducting an intensive vaccination campaign, especially in June. We aim to normalize in June,” the president said.

Erdoğan also highlighted the importance of the numerous city hospitals opened across Turkey in recent years during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Our city hospitals, which we established with public-private partnerships, played a critical role, especially during the pandemic period,” he said.

After setting consecutive records with the number of daily cases reaching as high as 60,000, Ankara on April 29 imposed a 17-day total lockdown that brought life to a standstill across the country. The measures, however, proved effective as the number of daily infections rapidly declined.

As daily cases fell as much as 75%, Ankara on Monday decided to ease some of the restriction in what it called a “gradual normalization period.”

The measures include a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays and a full lockdown during the weekends.
