Passenger traffic at Istanbul airports increased by 22 million last year compared to 2020.
According to the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL), last year the number of air passengers in Europe amounted to about 900 million people with 6.2 million domestic and international flights organized.
At the same time, the airports of the Turkish metropolis served 7% of passengers in Europe. In 2020, this figure was 5%.
Passenger traffic at Istanbul and Sabiha Gokcen airports has increased significantly, which is reflected in the statistics.
According to the General Directorate of State Airports of Turkey (DHMI), passenger traffic at Istanbul Airport in 2021 amounted to 37.18 million people (10.59 million on domestic routes and 26.59 million on international routes).
Passenger traffic growth was 59% compared to 2020, when this figure was 23.41 million people.
Passenger traffic at Sabiha Gokcen Airport in 2021 amounted to 24.97 million people with an increase of 47% compared to 2020.
