United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said 11 billion doses are needed to vaccinate 70% of the world’s population against COVID-19.
In his speech at the International Forum on COVID-19 Vaccine Cooperation, Guterres said vaccines must reach everyone and everywhere as soon as possible to prevent the emergence of other variants that could resist existing vaccines and undermine national immunization efforts.
“11 billion doses are needed to vaccinate 70% of the world’s population,” Guterres said,
He stressed that 70% is an important threshold to end the critical phase of the pandemic.
Drawing attention to the need to double the production for the equal distribution of the vaccine, Guterres emphasized that an urgent task force at the G-20 level is needed for the coordination and implementation of the output increase.
